HELP CONNECTING TECHNOLOGY-OBSESSED CHILDREN TO GOD'S WORD PART 7

Joy in Meeting Needs

In my previous post, I discussed ways to engage your child's gifting with examples from God's word about designing before building.

Encouraging your children to share their gifts with others can lead to a lifetime of joyfulness!

One of the things I’ve learned about children with a technical bent is they can be exceedingly generous if they are nudged in that direction.  There is a natural desire to keep a creation they’ve made for themselves, especially when making that item represents mastery of a craft in their eyes.

So, I don’t recommend that you drive an agenda to have them give away their favorite creation that took them months to make, but maybe a second one, or provide the resources and space to make something with that purpose. The key here is planting the seed so that if they see a need they can fill that need.  I’ve seen kids come up with some really crafty ideas on their own when they see a need.

So, it’s more important to give them space and awareness of the opportunities in your community where they can put their craft to work than to do something artificial.  Regardless, encouraging your technical child to share the wealth of their gift with others will not just bless others, but will come back to them in a way only God knows.

Conclusion

One last point to share is that Jesus grew up in a carpenter's house.  While there are no direct accounts of Jesus building anything in the Bible it’s fair to assume that in the course of his youth, he helped his earthly father in the workshop so your technical child should feel they are in good company.

So as we close, take a moment and think, what gift has God given your child and how can you help them?

  • Design before build

  • Perseverance through the project

  • Learn many skills

  • And be Generous
